The monitoring and distribution of City of Rio Rancho water undergoes multiple levels of sampling and testing. In July 2017, during the City of Rio Rancho’s utilities contractor’s internal audit of the water system, inconsistencies in one of the test’s data were discovered. This discovery was immediately self-reported to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). The City of Rio Rancho does not believe that this situation posed a direct risk to public health because there were and are a number of safeguards in place to ensure that Rio Rancho water is safe to consume. Additionally, the City’s contractor has since implemented policy changes to ensure accurate monitoring and reporting so that the City complies with Federal and State drinking water regulations.
