What is the City of Rio Rancho doing to fix our roads?
Why are our water/wastewater rates so high?
What can I do to make my community better?
If you've asked yourself one or more of these questions, then the Citizens' Academy is the place for you!
We're going virtual for the 2020 session!
The Citizens' Academy is an engaging 8-week long program that provides citizens with the working knowledge of city government and the essential tools needed to become effective community advocates. The program includes tours of City facilities (postponed for the 2020 session due to COVID-19 restrictions), presentations by department directors, and informational activities that give participants an insider’s perspective into how the City of Rio Rancho operates. This platform fosters informed and effective discussions and enables participants to share their views of Rio Rancho and their stories about why they live in and support the local community. The program is free for participants.
How to Apply
In order to apply, participants must live in Rio Rancho and be 18 years of age or older. Participants must commit to attending (virtually, of course) all eight sessions. Priority will be given to citizens who have not previously served on a City of Rio Rancho advisory board or commission or as an elected official. *The deadline to apply for the 2020 session was September 25.*
The Citizens' Academy begins October 5, 2020 and ends on November 23, 2020. Sessions are held virtually on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and will cover all aspects of city government from economic development to water and roads. The week of October 12, the session will be held on Tuesday, October 13 instead of on that Monday. A typical session will include a 45 minute to 1 hour presentation from department directors, followed by an interactive activity pertaining to the presentation.
